PASTORAL -
Caring for our students
At Hastings Boys' High School we insist on high standards of behaviour and self-discipline. Our experience tells us that boys at secondary school need clear expectations of behaviour and we provide these. We also understand that boys need to know that their school takes an interest in them personally, and that their teachers care about them and their progress. Education Review Office, in its most recent audit of the school, commented that
“the
continual emphasis on good behaviour, and a concern for each student's personal
growth and success creates a sage, positive, learning environment throughout the
school. Students feel that teachers genuinely care about them.''

The school has a zero tolerance to bullying and takes pro-active initiatives to minimise issues.
A key component of this provision is the student Centre where the student and home liaison office, guidance office, careers centre and the professionally staffed medical facility are sited. The Student Centre is the nucleus of a network of support, including form teachers, subject teachers, guidance counsellor, careers adviser and home liaison staff. We try to ensure that we have contact with every boy's home and that parents feel they can contact the school whenever they need to.
"Very effective support is provided for students through an extensive range of pastoral networks. The introduction of year level deans are a recent innovation that has had an immediate and positive influence on student behaviour."
