Stage Challenge TV Special 2010:  Winners Announced!

Open Division:
First place - Mt Maunganui College
Second place - Horowhenua College
Third place - Hastings Boys' High School and Tauranga Boys' College (tied)

STAGE CHALLENGE 2010 - sequence of events When it came to the Regional Competition, we were given the following five awards: • Award of Excellence in Lighting Design • Award of Excellence in concept • Award of Excellence in Environment/Social Awareness • Award of excellence in Drama • Stage Challenge Foundation award for Spirit of Stage Challenge   But, we were not given a placing! However, 9 weeks later when Stage Challenge was broadcast on television as part of 'Sticky TV' the National Judges announced that while every regional winner automatically qualifies for the National Final, they would also be giving out five 'wildcards' throughout the country. This meant that from all the schools that were not given a first place award, they could choose five schools that they believed should go through to the National Final.  To our great surprise they announced that Hastings Boys' High School had been awarded a 'wild card' and we were through to the last round of the competition. We all sat glued to our television sets for the Stage Challenge Final at 7:30am Saturday, 14th August 2010 when we were both stunned and thrilled to be awarded third place!   The huge amount of time, effort and commitment was definItely worth it and it will be a memory we will never forget.  Well done to all involved.

“Hero of War”

After a very successful competition in 2008, the HBHS Stage Challenge team were more than ready to enter to competition this year.  It was the end of 2009 that as a group we decided on a war-based theme. We wanted something strong and dramatic and something that was appealing to all New Zealanders. When it came to narrowing the theme down to a more specific focus, we found no topic more appropriate or more fitting than the story of one of our greatest role-models – Corporal Willie Apiata.  Our cast of 21 and crew of 11 rehearsed every Monday and Wednesday and couldn’t wait for “show day”. The highlights have been being able to select our own “war-appropriate” music and of course being able to play with guns. 

The boys put on a strong and disciplined performance and one that they can be extremely proud of. HBHS picked up awards for:  Excellence in Lighting Design, Excellence in concept, Excellence in Environment/Social Awareness and Excellence in Drama. But our most exciting moment of the night was receiving the Stage Challenge Foundation award for Spirit of Stage Challenge. Well done boys on an outstanding production!
