Leaders' Camp

On Tuesday 7 February the 2012 prefects dragged themselves out of bed early to make the trip to Turangi where we suited up for a white water rafting experience.  After a short trip we soon boarded our boats and headed off down the Tongariro River.  The river took the rafts along as we made our way down the river tackling the boulders and corners on our way.  We returned to Turangi to have lunch then headed to National Park to test our climbing skills.  The indoor wall allowed for all abilities to participate and test their skill.  The task of climbing seemed too simple for some so it was soon turned into a race to the top with Josh Foster holding the record at 6 seconds up the 4 metre high wall.

The Prefects returned to the East Coast Ski Lodge to save up energy for the Tongariro crossing the next day.  The day started off cloudy at the top of the mountains but soon disappeared leaving a great day for walking.  The steep climb brought some heavy breathing into the group but it was testing enough for some, who  decided to run the last 3km.  Tokaanu hot pools soothed the aching muscles and rewarded our  hard work.  On Thursday we toured through the National Army Museum in Waiouru where we were reminded of those who had fought in our wars.  Then we boarded the bus for home.

The last stop was at a river on the Napier-Taihape road where the brave (as we found out basketballers are not) chose to swim in the chilly  waters.  The  team returned  to  school  exhausted from the days away.

A big thank you to Mr Sturch, Mr Barrett, Mr Jenks, Mr Wiggins and Cam the gap student for organising and making the camp possible for the prefects.      Report by Lance Knauf—Head Boy
