Colts Cricket Review Term 1 2011

A new team to start the school year saw six Year 9’s join the more experienced Year 10’s in the squad. The team was captained by Jacob Henry. After a tentative start v NBHS and St John’s  the Colts then found their form and won seven of the remaining eight games, to be one of only two teams to have one loss in the Colts grade after Term One-a fine effort which promises much for Term Four.

The highlights were numerous, both from a team perspective and individually. We defeated the strong Lindisfarne Colts team with a highly disciplined performance under pressure and  displaying pride in playing for HBHS. The other team highlight was the trip to Gisborne Boys’ High School to play three matches. The team played exceptionally well in the first two games with comfortable wins in the 20/20 and first 50 over match.  However a change in the batting and bowling orders saw the team lose shape and play poorly to lose the last match. Two wins from three was a good result. The confidence this trip gave the boys saw them then dominate all their remaining Colt’s games during Term One.

There were several noteworthy performances: James Field with 351 runs (3 x 50’s) and 8 wickets and Tobie Birchall with 211 runs formed a fine opening partnership. Jacob Henry’s leadership, 162 runs and 9 wickets were crucial contributions, excellent bowling from Michael Stirling 8 wickets (4/5 v GBHS) and Tully Gilbert 11 wickets (4/11 v HNHS) were both consistent and reliable performers.  Newcomer Jarrod McLeod added value with a batting average of 19 and 12 wickets (6/8 v St Johns). Kaleb Jones was a big improver with both gloves and bat. Middle order batsmen Sam Field, Jack Newbery and Michael Stirling all showed great promise. Year 9 all rounders Bryce Green and Ibanez King Edwards displayed potential until injury curbed their seasons.

A fine start to 2011.
