Rugby

Rugby at Hastings Boys' has traditionally been one the most high profile sports at Hastings Boys' High School.  The 1st XV Rugby team has been one of the strongest high school teams in Hawke's Bay and NZ over many seasons.  The 1st XV is currently coached by Level 3 elite coach Mr. Tony McBride.  Mr McBride is Head of Physical Education and Director of the Rugby Academy at Hastings Boys'.  He is currently an Under 20 NZ Rugby Selector.  Sports Director Mr Teki is another highly qualified rugby and is the backs coach for the 1st XV Rugby squad.

Each season the 1st XV and 2nd XV compete in the elite Central North Island Boys' Schools Rugby competition played over Terms 2 and 3.  The Schools' top two teams compete in the Super 8 Rugby competition which sees the top boys' schools from across the Central North Island particpate.  Teams in this competition have frequently been graded amongst the top teams in NZ making Super 8 arguably the toughest school rugby competition in the world.  Previous Super 8 winners Hamilton BHS went on to win the World Schools' Championships!

In 2009 the school was very proud to see recent old boys Hika Elliot and Alby Mathieson, after magnificient Air NZ NPC seasons, take the next step in their rugby careers with selection to both Super 14 teams and more importantly the All Blacks.  These boys follow the tradition of many more Hastings Boys' 1st XV players such as Danny Lee.  We look forward to our school developing more of our players to reach such levels.

In 2011 Hastings Boys' High School will run ten rugby teams
