Callum Bailey (Junior Black Stick 2011) Returns to train and coach...
The Hockey Academy at Hastings Boys' High School started in 2009 with the aim of delivering high performance coaching to gifted and talented players. The Academy is currently running in Year 9 and Year 10. Year Y11-13 the Academy coaching is delivered by training and playing students with a top local club's senior players. This unique structured, linked approach in Hawke's Bay hockey ensures top players at school are extended by working with Hawke's Bay's elite players. Hawke's Bay High Performance Coach Greg Nicol said that "schools that choose to put their 1st XI Hockey teams into the Mens' Club League do so at the detriment to the development of their senior players".
A measure of the success of the Hockey Academy is that two years ago Hastings Boys' High School had just two Hawke's Bay Representive players in our teams. That number has now grown to 14 students representing the Province. The benefits will be seen in our teams at both Super 8 and National Tournament levels in three years time. The newly formed Colts team is almost entirely made up of Hawke's Bay Representative players.
