Ākina Man Values

We believe in more than just academic success. We believe in growing good men. The Ākina Man is our vision for every student who walks through our gates. He is guided by four core values that shape how he learns, how he leads, and how he lives.

The Ākina Man values of Empathy, Respect, Integrity and Diligence are an important part of our boys’ education and personal growth as they begin their journey in secondary education.

The values provide each student with a sense of identity, pride in themselves, and pride in where they come from, with the underlying theme of respect. The programme aims to begin a rite of passage, in which we encourage our young men to move towards becoming good men, by reflecting on their own whakapapa, to look forward to where they want to go, and who they want to be.

In the Māori waka, the leader calls “Ākina!” to the men when it is time to find the strength and perseverance to paddle hard.

Living the Ākina Man Values

We celebrate students who embody the Ākina spirit, and we challenge each boy to rise to this standard. As a school, we organise around five pillars of Academic, Culture, Leadership, Community and Sport. The Colours and Honours system recognises students who demonstrate excellence in these areas.

These values are more than ideals, they are everyday actions.

They are reinforced in our classrooms, on the sports field, in leadership opportunities, and through how we relate to one another.

Our Honours and Colours system recognises excellence in the five areas of Academic, Culture, Sport, Community and Leadership.

The Ākina values are the foundation of our school culture and the measure of success for every young man we send into the world.
