Carpentry - Furniture Making Year 13 (Level 3)

The course builds on the introduction to basic carpentry skills and knowledge used in carpentry, building and joinery industry as covered in the Year 11 course. The course is an internally assessed, Unit Standards based course, to gain BCITO (Building and Construction Industry Training Organization) credits.

Standards Assessed:

The course is an internally assessed, Unit Standards based course, utilising Unit Standards prepared and moderated by Competenz as part of their School Resources for Furniture Making programme, offered to schools.

A combination of the standards below are presented up to a maximum of 20 credits.

US 9792  Operate a dovetailing machine to dovetail wooden drawers.  (4 credits).
US 25557 Assemble and fit traditional drawers to a cabinet using wooden runners.  (4 credits).
US 25562 Fit doors to a cabinet using adjustable hinges.  (3 credits).
US 25572 Demonstrate knowledge of hardware used in furniture making and its application.  (6 credits).

Entry Requirements:

There is no prerequisite for entry but having completed the Year 11/12 Carpentry course and being familiar with the procedures in the carpentry workshop will be of great benefit to students. Alternatively, having been in any of the other workshops for Y11/12 would be beneficial. 

Possible Further Study Opportunities:

The Year 13 course as part of a course of secondary school study towards full NCEA Level 2 or 3 accreditation can lead students towards a pre-trade/pre-apprenticeship training course through any polytechnic tertiary institution (EIT and the like).

Building and Construction, Quantity Surveying, Project management, Land Surveying, CAD, Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, etc), Architectural Draughting, Structural Designer, etc.
