Learning Philosophy

Hastings Boys’ High School believes that teaching and learning is most effective when the student is placed at the center of the learning process.

Therefore, all learning experiences are created with this in mind, whether they be inside or outside the classroom. To help foster this approach, the school has developed the “Akina Learning” model that encompasses the “Four Feathers” of learning. These four feathers symbolise the Huia bird – a symbol that contributes an integral part to our school's identity and values.

The Four Feathers of Ākina Learning

Whanaungatanga
Based on establishing and nourishing rich relationships between learners, teachers and whanau.

Ako
Student centered activities that involve inquiry, collaboration and problem solving

Hononga
Connecting learning to the prior knowledge and experiences of our students so that the learning has relevance

Taumata
High expectations that encourage students to strive to give their best and reach their potential

Hastings Boys’ High School also recognises the importance of Education Outside of The Classroom (EOTC). As such students at our school will gain a variety of rich experiences that come from visiting locations in our local community, wider region and overseas. The knowledge gained from these experiences allows our students to make further sense of what they have learned in the classroom and better understand the “real world” and their place in it.

The application of this progressive model of learning to an approach that also draws from the tradition and structure that has served the school so well in the past, means that students receive a well-rounded education and are fully equipped to be valuable members of society.

Learning Support

Every boy learns differently, and we are committed to making sure each student has the tools and support he needs to succeed.

Literacy and Numeracy Support

Our dedicated Literacy and Numeracy programmes help students develop the core skills needed to thrive in all subjects. Through targeted small-group sessions and individual support, boys are guided to improve reading, writing, and maths.

Prefect Tutoring

Senior student leaders give their time each week to tutor boys, offering peer-based support across a range of subjects. It's a powerful way to strengthen academic success, build relationships across year levels, and encourage a culture where helping others is valued.

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

For students who are new to English, our ESOL staff provide a welcoming and supportive environment to grow language skills. We focus on helping boys integrate into school life while developing their communication, reading, and writing abilities.

Culturally Responsive Learning

Our Pasifika and Māori students have dedicated Deans responsible for ensuring their specific learning needs are met. Huis and Fonos are held with the community to assess and develop support initiatives. The Ākina Study Hub is dedicated to helping Pasifika students with homework and learning.
