Course Description:
Media Studies is about the active exploration, analysis, creation and enjoyment of the media and its products.   Media Studies examines the dynamic role of the media in society, how the media constructs messages about individuals, communities and cultures and how media products are produced, controlled and distributed.

Year 13 Media  Studies is a course based on Media in society, reading Media Texts and Media production. Also a Construction in Mechanical technology standard is offered creating articulated armour using thermoplastics.

Achievement Standard 91497     3.8
Write a Media Text to meet the requirements of a brief.  (Internal 3 credits literacy).  Script.

Achievement Standard 9149     3.3
Demonstrate  understanding of the media representation of an aspect of NZ culture or society.  (Internal 3 credits).  Multimedia presentation.

Achievement Standard 91494     3.5
Produce a design for a media product that meets the requirements of a brief.  (Internal 4 credits).  Planning portfolio.

Achievement Standard 91495     3.6
Produce a media product to meet the requirements of a brief.  (Internal 6 credits).  Film.Achievement standard 91620
Implement complex procedures to integrate parts using resistant materials to make a specified product.  (Internal 6 credits).  Articulated armour.

There is no prerequisite for entry but having completed the Year 12 Media Studies course and being familiar with media language and processes will be of great benefit to students.

Successful participation in this course will prepare students for further study leading to a wide range of careers including journalism (print, radio and television), broadcasting, marketing, communications, advertising, public relations, film and documentary making and teaching.
