Physical Education Year 13 (Level 3)

Course Description:
Level 3 Physical Education aids students to discover and develop their own physical abilities, acquire knowledge, skills and an understanding of movement.   It is preferable that you have taken PE at  L2 but this is not a prerequisite. 

In this academic subject students will maintain regular, enjoyable physical activity with an increasing understanding of its role in self-care and well-being, for example, by taking daily exercise, learning how fitness and health are related, setting goals, meeting their own nutritional needs, planning for regular physical activity, relaxation, and recreation, and developing a positive body image and positive attitudes towards physical activity.
This course follows on from Physical Education - NCEA Level 2 and is often essential for students intending to continue with Physical Education courses at tertiary institutions.

Physical Education students have the opportunity to study topics on analysing an activity (biomechanics), practical performances (badminton), evaluating physical activity experiences, demonstrating and evaluating leadership styles (mountain bike trip to Rotorua) and examining an issue in society (research).

The Physical Education topics offer 19 credits towards NCEA Level 3. There are 5 internal standards worth 19 credits and no external standards. These Physical Education topics also offer 15 Literacy credits and 4 Numeracy credits.

To gain course endorsement or entry to a tertiary institution you will need to complete 14 credits in Level 3 Physical Education.

We also offer Scholarship Physical Education for those students who want to be extended academically and work towards the highest qualification you can receive in secondary education.

Standards Assessed: (all standards are internally assessed)

AS 91498 (A.S 3.1) Evaluate physical activity experiences to devise strategies for lifelong wellbeing. (4 Credits).
AS 91499 (A.S 3.2) Anaylse a physical skill performed by self or others. (3 Credits).
AS 91501 (A.S 3.4) Demonstrate quality performance of a physical activity in an applied setting. (4 Credits).
AS 91502 (A.S 3.5)  Examine a current physical activity trend, event or issue and its impact on NZ Society.  (4 Credits).
AS 91505 (A.S 3.8) Examine contemporary leadership principles applies in physical activity contexts.  (4 Credits).

Entry Requirements: (entry into courses are subject to head of department approval)
Students require a minimum of 15 credits in Level 2 Achievement Standards PE and Level 2 Literacy.
Some exceptions may be made at the discretion of the HOD PE. School physical education uniform is Compulsory.

Possible Further Study Opportunities:
Sport Science, Recreation studies, Physical Education teaching, Exercise Prescription, Outdoor and adventure pursuits and Sports Coaching & Management tertiary study options are available at most University and Polytechnic Institute’s in New Zealand.
