Academic Curriculum - Dual Pathway

At Hastings Boys' High School we believe there must be relevant pathways so that every boy can succeed.

Some boys will follow pathways to university and others to trade skills. Since 2005 we have been a dual pathway school, using both the Cambridge IGCSE and NCEA curriculums. We have an accelerated academic programme including access to Cambridge International Examinations, along with an extensive and very successful trades partnership programmes with E.I.T.

We encourage students to make informed decisions. This means consulting the curriculum guide on these pages and speaking with different groups, including parents, whānau, teachers, deans and the Careers Department.

International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)

The Cambridge International programme sets a global standard which is recognised by universities and employers worldwide. The programme focuses on deep subject knowledge and strong academic foundations. Students are challenged to think critically, evaluate evidence and construct an argument while being supported by comprehensive resources and classroom tools for teachers.

Having participated in the programme for over 20 years, our Cambridge International teachers are skilled subject specialists who regularly engage in professional development to maintain their knowledge and connection to the Cambridge programme.

IGCSE is offered to Year 11 (NCEA Level 1) students.

National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA)

NCEA is taught at years 11, 12, and 13 and is the current educational standard in New Zealand. Each subject is divided into learning standards. Learning standards are assessed internally by our teachers, and externally via exams and portfolio submissions. When a standard has been acquired the student receives credits. Students must attain a certain number of credits to gain the NCEA qualification.

As of August 2025, the government announced the intention to end NCEA. As a long-time Cambridge International school, Hastings Boys' High School is well placed to transition to the new system. Our teaching staff are adept at catering to both NCEA and IGCSE styles of teaching and learning.
