Twenty-six years ago, my father arrived in Aotearoa with one suitcase, three pairs of clothes, and no ability to speak English.

He arrived hoping for a better life for his children. Growing up, I watched him take every opportunity seriously — working long shifts to put food on the table. From him, I learned that nothing replaces effort. No amount of talent, no amount of luck.

Six years after my father arrived, my mother came to New Zealand. She taught me something different. She showed me that how you treat people matters just as much as what you achieve. That success means very little if you forget who you are or where you came from.

Those two lessons — hard work and humility — shape the way I view leadership.

Twenty-six years after my father stepped off that plane, I stand honoured to be the first Asian Head Boy of Hastings Boys’ High School.

But being Head Boy isn’t about me. It’s about the people I get to stand alongside every day — my fellow prefects, the teachers, and the students of Hastings Boys’.

In my short time at high school, I’ve learned that the best moments don’t come from standing above anyone. They come from standing with people — backing each other, showing up, and being there when it matters. This year for me is about showing up, growing together, and leading alongside my fellow brothers.

As I step into this exciting year, I’m proud and honoured to be leading the students of Hastings Boys' as Head boy, not from above, but alongside them.
