Headmaster's Welcome

Kia ora koutou e te whānau

At this school, we produce world leaders in politics, finance, the arts, and a wide range of sporting codes. We are also really good at getting boys ready for the trades and other practical based jobs once they leave school. We do this because of the fantastic teachers who genuinely care about our boys and will do all they can to make sure they get the most out of their time here – and that is what we will do for your son too.

Interested in touring the school or having a one-on-one meeting with the headmaster? We'd love to hear from you.

Life at Hastings Boys' High School

Established at the beginning of last century...

Hastings Boys’ High School is viewed as a traditional school with its emphasis on discipline, respect, and tolerance of others.

We welcome this perception.

NCEA or IGCSE

We are the only school in Hawke’s Bay offering the prestigious Cambridge IGCSE curriculum.

Ākina Man Values

The Ākina Man values are an important part of our boys’ education and personal growth as they begin their journey in secondary education.

The aim is to provide each student with a sense of identity, pride in themselves, and pride in where they come from, with the underlying theme of respect. The programme begins a rite of passage, in which we encourage our young men to move towards becoming good men, by reflecting on their own whakapapa, to look forward to where they want to go, and who they want to be.

On the waka taua, the leader calls “Ākina!” to the men when it is time to find the strength and perseverance to paddle hard and to give a supreme effort.

What Sets Us Apart

Super Eight Schools Programme

Formed in 1997, the New Zealand Super Eight group of schools incorporates the eight boys high schools from their respective provincial cities of the central North Island. The first sporting competitions commenced in 1998 involving rugby and cricket. Since that time, the Super Eight concept has grown to include not only 10 sports competitions, but also a cultural festival and professional development programmes for management staff and curriculum teachers.

School Mission Statement

To provide the young men of Hastings Boys’ High school with diverse learning opportunities that educate, prepare, and develop them, ensuring success, empowering each individual to achieve their full potential.

Our Four Feathers learning philosophy provides a solid academic foundation, and all boys are encouraged to complement their learning with co- and extra-curricular activities. Our pastoral programme wraps around the boys, whether that be accelerating their progress or providing extension work.
